The findings of Dr. Paul Kelley, a leading researcher at Oxford University, indicate that the most common form of torture these days is actually having to wake up and go.
The human body runs on biologic timers, called Circadian Rhythm, or the body clock. This genetically pre-programmed cycle regulates the energy levels, the production of hormones, the function of the brain, and perception of time. Research has shown that we are torturing our body by getting up early and starting work before 10 am every day, as we are negatively affecting the Circadian Rhythm, and disturbing the balance of the body.
According to Kelley: “We cannot change our 24-hour rhythms. You cannot learn to get up at a certain time…your liver and your heart have different patterns and you’re asking them to shift two or three hours.”
The 8-hour working day was introduced in the early 20th century, along with the 24/7 factory productivity. This did not consider the natural human body clock. Moreover, during the ancient times, our bodies evolved around the daily cycle of sunlight, not these modern strategies. He suggested that schools start from 8.30 am to 10.00 am. This theory was tested at one school, and after some time, the attendance and general productivity of students had significantly enhanced, and their grades were increased drastically.
Can you imagine the improvements if we introduced this change into all modern society sectors? We would be full of energy, productive, focused, and happy, instead of overtired, overworked, and addicted to coffee. People who are forced to work before 10 am are exposed to emotional and physical stress and suffer from various health issues.
Due to all this, people drink more than 3 cups of coffee daily and try their best to look fresh and be able to remain alert during the entire day. To speak in numbers, that is 40 billion dollars spent on coffee annually!
